A good rug is such a big moment in a room. It can really set the stage and change your room from just “pretty” to “holy moly your living room belongs in a magazine”. That’s a big jump. After being inspired by this room and its stunning statement rug, we decided to round up a few of our favorite rugs, and send you away with sizing tips to help your next purchase. Get ready for your wow moment.
From colorful to neutral, small to large – choosing a rug can be a bit overwhelming. There are just SO many out there in SO many different shades of lovely. So we’ve pulled together some of our faves to help do the dirty work for you.
RUG SIZING TIPS
1. Measure, measure, measure.
This seems very obvious, but it’s easy to get hasty and just order the rug you think will work. I like to take multiple measuring tapes to map out the room and then see the how the furniture will fit around it. Getting visual always helps.
2. Be careful not go to small.
Rugs can be pricey, and that smaller price point for the smaller rug can be appealing. Until you put it in your room and it makes your room feel choppy and mini. That extra few feet really make a difference in the feel of the room.
3. Don’t be afraid to layer.
Do you have a too small rug that you just love? Think about layering it over a larger, more neutral rug.
4. Keep the shape of your room in mind.
A square rug in a rectangular room will just feel funny. A rectangular rug in a square room could be too big. It’s kind of like Goldilocks, finding the one that is just right can take some time – but is worth the extra effort.
5. Avoid Floating furniture.
Obviously this rule can be broken, but a general rule of thumb is that the legs of your furniture should all be able to fit on your rug. BUT, if you decide this isn’t for you, just make sure you are consistent with your leg placement, and make sure there are at least the front two legs getting some rug love.
