The Dress Theory in Seattle is a shop pretty enough to live in; and even more so to grab some serious interior inspiration from. Lux textures and gold accessories are its shining stars, crafted by Manderley Design Co. and all the gorgeous wedding dresses are the added bonus. Before I started my interior design business a few years ago, I worked in the wedding industry in Seattle for 10+ years. So when the owner of the Dress Theory, told me it was time for a refresh of their space, I jumped at the chance. The Dress Theory is Seattle’s beloved dress shop that has a small boutique feel, a features a really unique collection of hand-selected dresses, many from independent and up-and-coming designers. They really pride themselves on providing a personal, special experience while shopping for your dress.
Camille, the lovely proprietress of the Dress Theory, wanted a space that was a little more elegant and chic then their previous space, but it still needed to be comfortable, warm, and welcoming.
The building they are in was built about 60 years ago, so we had some things to contend with – crazy plaster walls, hardwood floors that had seen better days, and a tiny bathroom – but we also had lots and lots of the most gorgeous light through windows that soar to the ceiling. It felt very much like a Paris apartment to me, so I had fun creating what I thought of as my single-girl-in-Paris dream.
The new shop features a beautiful vintage silk pink rug that I found on eBay, which was the inspiration for the rest of the space. That rug might have been the hardest thing that I’ve ever had to let go to a client! We covered the windows with gorgeous sheers from Restoration Hardware so that the light would be filtered and dreamy. RH does sheers with heavy textured linen so they are substantial and luxurious; they’re really incredible.
We also filled the space with velvet sofas, and lots and lots of moveable seating in the form of poofs, stools, and ottomans with interesting finishes like gold leaf, velvet, ostrich skin leather, lucite, and the fluffiest faux fur. It has a collected over time feel that fits perfect with those vintage plaster walls. Oh, and lots of gold everywhere!
As always for me, the lighting was the most fun. There are two separate rooms, and both received a gorgeous gold chandelier. The first is a bit modern and very glamorous, and lends the space a little bit of edge. The second is oversized and covered in actual gold leaf, for a super luxurious feel. I really love them both!
We finished off the space with custom pillows in some of my favorite fabrics to add pattern and color, and also used a feminine, romantic wallpaper from Rifle paper company in the bathroom. The finished space is feminine, romantic, and the perfect spot to spend the ultimate fantasy day…wedding dress shop with your best girls!
