Flower Arranging Made Simple with Cecily Mendell

Many people think you need to spend a fortune on a florist to make an arrangement that is a chic, pulled together compliment to a room. But interior designer Cecily Mendell of Cecy J is here to prove otherwise. Using these genius tricks, she does all the flowers for photo shoots and when styling client’s houses. Get ready—it’s officially time to cultivate your green thumb!

1. Let the flowers do their thing.

All we did to create this radiant vase of tulips was drop three bundles of orange tulips into a vase and add water. No trimming and no fussing. We let these tulips arrange themselves.

2. Go for plants that will last

Our client requested some flowers that would last and not need to be constantly replaced. So we opted for a low, round vase filled will hardy moss and succulents.

3. Simple tree branches can make for a perfect arrangement.

We wanted some scale for the this living room with extra tall ceilings and crisp, fresh decor. We simply bought a basket and stuffed it with eucalyptus branches. We then added a bit of color with some lavender and a bundle of yellow berries in small vases. Cost effective and impactful.

4. Fresh Mint

When entertaining, I always buy fresh mint. Even if it’s not on the list for cocktails, it’s inexpensive, looks pretty and can make any space smell fresh.

5. Gardenias

I am mad for the smell of fresh Gardenias. I always like to add to a client’s bedroom for a breathtaking smell when they walk in the room. We paired these Gardenias with some green Hydrangea for a pop of color. Just check with clients or friends and family first to make sure they like the scent you love and don’t have any allergy issues.
