How to Ready Your Home for Visitors in 10 Minutes Flat

One of the best parts of the holidays is spending time with family and friends, but we know you’re busy and tidying up for guests isn’t at the top of your to-do list. So, we looked to our friends at MyDomaine for their genius tips on readying your home for visitors in 10 minutes! “When that old friend drops into town or your home suddenly becomes the impromptu setting for a dinner party, we don’t want you to panic at the thought of the unsightly state of your kitchen. Read on for an infallible game plan should one of these last-minute hosting scenarios become your reality.”

Keep an Eye On the Time

Set an alarm for a few minutes before your guests’ set arrival time so you can really make those last moments count.

Focus on High-Traffic Areas

Foyers, living rooms, and bathrooms are most important. Make sure that there are no sneakers, umbrellas, or other such items blocking your home’s entryway—having to climb over odds and ends is not a great way to enter a home. If you’ll be spending most of the time in the living room, focus your attentions there. The bathroom is make-or-break.

Doll Up The Bathroom

Spend a little more time tidying and dolling up your bathroom than other places. Give the sink a quick wash. Clean off any marks from your mirror and faucets. Make sure a hand towel is in plain view. Receiving a guest who will be staying the night? Set out a few fluffy towels on the counter.

Do a Quick Once-Over

Clorox Cleaning Wipes are your best friend: Run these bad boys over every surface. Fluff your pillows and give your blankets a quick re-folding. Tidy your stacks of books. If you have a DustBuster, keep an eye out as you do this and suck up any glaring dust bunnies that may be hanging around.

Take out the Trash

If you do nothing else, do this. An overflowing trash bin or bits of junk lying around is not welcoming and is so simple to remedy. Check to make sure that if your rubbish bins runneth over, you take them out—and don’t forget to put in fresh garbage bags.

Set the Mood

If it’s nighttime, make sure you take a moment to turn on your outdoor lights and dim your indoor ones a bit—approaching a completely dark home can be scary, and entering a startlingly bright room isn’t ideal either. If you’re entertaining, put a bit of music (nothing over the top!) on at a low volume.

Light a Candle

Light a candle or burn some incense or Palo Santo wood. Scent is so important when it comes to our feelings of comfort and happiness, so a warm and nice-smelling home is one of the simplest ways to make it feel instantly cozy and guest ready.
